Tom Ritchey

Jim's reviews

Read this months article from Jim our leading expert on all things biking.

Tom Ritchey, frame builder, innovator, legend.

I was introduced to Tom Ritchey at the Bicycle Academy as short while ago, he was polite but couldn’t have looked more distracted, his attention taken by the crowd of fellow frame builders that were filling the workshop. Tom had spent the day demonstrating his frame building skills and was keen to get back to the welding torch. During the evening Tom shared his thoughts on his career, place in cycling history and the future development of cycling. A humble man Tom says his contribution to the development of cycling is incidental, “who am I to think I can do better than the great engineers who have gone before me”.

Tom has been building frames for over forty years and is still passionate and enthused by the process today. Probably no single person has had a greater influence on the birth and growth of mountain biking as Tom. He built the original custom MTB frames for the early pioneers such as Gary Fisher and Joe Breeze. Already a renowned builder of road frames Tom was the right man in the Bay area to create a new style of bike for the emerging sport. Tom built a 650B bike around this time, 30 years later the rest of the bike industry has caught up!

Always an advocate of steel frames, Ritchey continue to manufacture some of the sweetest riding bicycle frames available. Each one to Tom’s exact design to instil the sublime Ritchey ride quality to every design. During the 90s when the cycle world was switching to aluminium Tom’s riders were continuing to win world championships on steel frames. Tom still designs and prototypes all Ritchey products at his self-built workshop in California and everything is tested by him personally. Tom’s riding mileage is legendary and affords him a great way to test new products in real world riding and to clear the mind for the next moment of inspiration.

Of course, Ritchey Logic also produce superb components, wheels and tyres which are available in a choice of standards and price points:

Superlogic, the very best products using the finest materials and production techniques.

WCS (World Champion Series), high quality parts in either carbon or alloy.

Competition, high value alloy parts that follow the designs of the higher end parts.

Ritchey Logic have this year introduced complete bike builds which offer the full Ritchey riding experience in a complete package. The range includes road, MTB and cyclo-cross, next year with the release of the Outback Ritchey will also offer a fully equipped adventure bike. Perhaps this of all the Ritchey models will be the model that most reflects the style of bike that Tom rides most often himself; a bike that can be ridden on unpaved roads, all day long.

Back at the Bicycle Academy it’s time for Tom to relight the welding torch….

2017 Ritchey Break-Away Carbon frameset

The patented Ritchey Break-Away® design has been heralded by mainstream cycling media as one of the most innovative bikes on the market today. From 2015, this incredible blend of travel convenience and no-compromise performance is now available in a lightweight, stiff yet silky smooth full carbon version.

Carbon fiber bikes for travel? Yes. Ritchey has offered the Titanium Carbon Break-Away (with a full carbon rear triangle and fork) for years with no issues. Our carbon fiber designs are very strong—the force required to damage your Carbon Break-Away while packed in its case would have also damaged any frame of any material.

2017 Ritchey Road Logic Complete Build

The Road Logic carries many of the subtleties and details gleaned from Tom's vast experience with steel frames, destined to be a modern classic. Tom designed an all-new, heat-treated and triple-butted Ritchey Logic tubeset for the new Road Logic, featuring aggressively short-butted sections optimized for TIG welding that save weight and improve ride quality. Ritchey's forged-and-machined integrated head tube uses standard drop-in bearings and saves 80 grams over a standard head tube design. With room for larger road tires (up to 700x28c depending on make and model) and classic Ritchey geometry, the Road Logic is ideally suited for long, epic days in the saddle on roads that are not always paved, and still nimble and stiff enough to take the county line sprint at the end of the day.
